Therapy Techniques & Options

While we primarily engage in a dialogue of mutual exchange and explore your issues by talking together, there are some creative options you may feel drawn to use.

Sometimes it’s helpful to support your process by working with images or symbols that arise directly out of the therapeutic experience.  For example, sometimes it can be easier to describe how something feels by drawing it, or working with an image or symbol that says it better than “words.”  Sometimes it’s helpful for couples to draw their relationship dynamic in terms of how much space each one takes up in the relationship and work with this dynamic in therapy.

Other clients like to explore their dreams and work with dream images through journaling, active imagination or drawing.   Psychodrama is another expressive and interactional method of working to release unresolved issues by restructuring relational dynamics from one’s past or family or origin.  Psychodrama can be a powerful way of seeing patterned dynamics and reworking one’s own response to these patterns.

These techniques can support the flow of therapy, and usually arise naturally out of the process in which we are engaged.  We can discuss any of these techniques as possibilities during the course of working together.

However you want to work, I will meet you where you are and help guide us in a way that allows your imagination to enter the process and “play” with images and ideas as we develop new ways of looking at your life, and try out new ideas in therapy first.  The imagination can be a powerful bridge in transforming the old to the new.

  • You shall be free indeed when your days
are not without a care nor your nights
without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life
and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.

    ~ Kahlil Gibran
