My Approach to Therapy & Counseling

I specialize in working with adolescents, adults and couples on a variety of issues including: relationships issues, women’s issues, personal empowerment and finding authentic voice, mothering and parenting. I also work with clients experiencing quarter-life and mid-life crises, loss of meaning or spiritual crisis. Many clients come in to work on anxiety, depression, anger, loss, grief, guilt or trauma. Many want to focus on unresolved issues in their relationships, family of origin and childhood, or in their current relationships and life choices. Still others want to work on successfully navigating major life transitions, have specific life goals, and life-long dreams they want to fulfill or aspects of unlived life and unrealized potential they want to develop and experience.

Whatever brings you to therapy, change happens organically from the inside out, and we follow the rhythm of your pace and your timing in this process.

Couples Counseling

Couples seek counseling for a number of reasons. Many want to explore the relational dynamics that need change while developing new skills for enhanced communication and resolving daily or major conflicts. Couples too need to be willing to suspend old ways of relating in favor of trying out new behaviors with each other. Learning to listen carefully to one’s partner and letting the other know you’ve been heard is a skill that can be learned and practiced right in the relationship. Learning to hold back action and examine one’s automatic thoughts and attitudes about a partner is also a disciplined practice couples can learn in order to avoid unnecessary entanglements. Often your feelings towards your partner can be your best opportunity to examine your own attitudes and behaviors and be a catalyst for deep change in yourself. This can involve both learning to differentiate yourself more clearly from your partner, and finding the ways in which your partner may “carry” unclaimed aspects of yourself. Patterns from each person’s family of origin can also significantly impact our behavior with our partners.

Focusing on your strengths as a couple, we will tackle the issues that most challenge you. I work with couples ranging from premarital counseling to those in long-term partnerships or marriages.

Is to have never fully tasted
The waters of its own essence

  • Ay, you are like an ocean,
    And though heavy-grounded ships await
the tide upon your shores, yet, even like an
ocean, you cannot hasten your tides.

  • Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart.
    Who looks outside, dreams...
    Who looks inside, awakens

  • You shall be free indeed when your days
are not without a care nor your nights
without a want and a grief,
But rather when these things girdle your life
and yet you rise above them naked and unbound.

    ~ Kahlil Gibran

    Overthrow of an existing order
